NJ Road Test Appointment Checklist
Everything you need to bring, verify, and do before, during, and after your New Jersey MVC road test.
Required Documents
You will be turned away if you are missing any critical document. Double-check before leaving home.
Must be the original — no photocopies accepted.
Required for drivers who obtained their permit at age 16.
If your permit has expired, you may need a new examination permit from MVC.
Required if you are under 18 years of age — parent or guardian must sign the permit.
Current insurance card showing the vehicle is insured.
Original registration card for the vehicle you are using.
Print or show confirmation email / booking number from the MVC.
Vehicle Inspection Checklist
The examiner will verify these items before the road test begins. A failed vehicle inspection means no test that day.
Day-of Steps
Late arrivals may forfeit their appointment. Build in travel time for traffic.
Bring all documents. The examiner will review them before you get in the car.
The examiner will ask you to demonstrate horn, lights, wipers, and signals from inside the car.
A basic vision screening may be conducted at the MVC office before the road test.
Typically 15–20 minutes. You'll be evaluated on starting, turning, stopping, parking, and highway entry if applicable.
You'll be told your result immediately. If you pass, you receive a basic license on the spot (digital). If you don't, you may reschedule after 2 weeks.
