    NJ Road Test Appointment Checklist
    Print and bring to your MVC appointment

    Required Documents

    You will be turned away if you are missing any critical document. Double-check before leaving home.

    Valid NJ Learner's Permit
    Required

    Must be the original — no photocopies accepted.

    Completed 6-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Certificate
    Required

    Required for drivers who obtained their permit at age 16.

    Examination Permit (if applicable)
    Required

    If your permit has expired, you may need a new examination permit from MVC.

    Signed Parental / Guardian Consent
    Required

    Required if you are under 18 years of age — parent or guardian must sign the permit.

    Proof of Insurance for the Vehicle
    Required

    Current insurance card showing the vehicle is insured.

    Vehicle Registration
    Required

    Original registration card for the vehicle you are using.

    Scheduled Appointment Confirmation

    Print or show confirmation email / booking number from the MVC.

    Vehicle Inspection Checklist

    The examiner will verify these items before the road test begins. A failed vehicle inspection means no test that day.

    Horn
    Must be in working order.
    Headlights & Tail Lights
    Both high and low beams functional.
    Turn Signals (Front & Rear)
    Must blink correctly on all four corners.
    Brake Lights
    All brake lights must illuminate.
    Windshield Wipers
    Front wipers must work properly.
    Windshield
    No cracks in the driver's field of view.
    Rear-View Mirror
    Must be securely mounted and provide full rear view.
    Both Side Mirrors
    Left and right exterior mirrors must be present and adjustable.
    Passenger-Side Brake (Dual Controls)
    Required if using an instructor's vehicle — already equipped on Golden Wheel cars.
    Seat Belts
    Working belts for both driver and front passenger (examiner).
    Emergency / Parking Brake
    Must engage and release fully.
    Tires
    No flat or visibly damaged tires.
    License Plates
    Front and rear plates must be visible and securely attached.
    Dashboard Warning Lights
    No check-engine or warning lights should be illuminated.

    Day-of Steps

    1
    Arrive 15 Minutes Early

    Late arrivals may forfeit their appointment. Build in travel time for traffic.

    Check In at the MVC Window

    Bring all documents. The examiner will review them before you get in the car.

    Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

    The examiner will ask you to demonstrate horn, lights, wipers, and signals from inside the car.

    Vision Check

    A basic vision screening may be conducted at the MVC office before the road test.

    The Road Test

    Typically 15–20 minutes. You'll be evaluated on starting, turning, stopping, parking, and highway entry if applicable.

    Results

    You'll be told your result immediately. If you pass, you receive a basic license on the spot (digital). If you don't, you may reschedule after 2 weeks.

    10 Most Common Mistakes

    • Rolling through a stop sign (automatic fail)
    • Failing to check mirrors and blind spots before lane changes
    • Improper parallel parking — too far from the curb (>12 inches)
    • Turning too wide or cutting corners
    • Speeding or driving too slowly
    • Forgetting to signal before turning or changing lanes
    • Not coming to a complete stop before a crosswalk
    • Improper use of the brake — jerky or sudden stops
    • Cell phone visible or in hand — automatic fail
    • Failing the vehicle inspection before the test even begins

    Prohibited Items & Actions

    • Cell phone — must be off or on silent, out of sight
    • Passengers other than the examiner
    • GPS mounted on windshield (must be removed)
    • Expired permit or missing documents
    • Uninsured or unregistered vehicle
    Notes

    NJ Road Test Scoring Quick Reference

    Pass

    Score 80 or above (20 or fewer points deducted). No automatic failures committed.

    Fail

    Score below 80 (21+ points deducted) OR any automatic failure offense.

    Reschedule

    If you fail, you must wait at least 2 weeks before retesting at the MVC.
