Expert Tips for Stress-Free Practice
Advice from our certified instructors on how to make practice driving productive and safe.
1. Start in Empty Lots
Don't jump straight onto busy roads. Spend the first few sessions in a large, empty parking lot practicing starting, stopping, turning, and getting a feel for the vehicle's dimensions.
2. Keep Emotions in Check
Your teen is already nervous. Yelling or gasping will make them panic. Use a calm, steady voice. If a situation gets tense, pull over safely and take a breath.
3. Give Advanced Notice
Say "At the next traffic light, we're going to turn right" instead of "Turn right here!" Give your teen plenty of time to process instructions, check mirrors, and signal.
4. Review Before You Drive
Before turning the key, discuss the goal for the session. "Today we're going to focus on smooth stops" or "Let's practice lane changes." Reviewing goals sets expectations.
Need Professional Reinforcement?
Sometimes it's best to let the pros handle the tricky stuff. If practice driving is causing tension, or you want to ensure they're ready for the road test, book an additional lesson.
